Let's go on strike. Oh yeah?

Benazir Bhutto is assasinated in Pakistan. Kashmiris are observing strike. Why Mr. Geelani? What is this strike for and against who? It is a sad event. A leader and 20 people have been killed in a brutal way and solidarity with the people of that country is a nice gesture. Nobody is against that but why should we hurt ourselves. 9 kashmiris were hurt in the protests inside Kashmir. A day of school and work was lost yet again. People working for the government will be paid anyways and they will accept that money even when they didn't work. Why should a poor self employed Kashmiri suffer any further? For what? this doesn't even make sense at all. Strike is our only answer for anything that happens in this world which we deem to be against us somehow. Even a log would come up with a new method of registering its protest in as much time as we have spent going on strikes. We have mastered this art and I am sure nobody in this world can beat us at that. It is a shame.

What do you say to the idea of a strike against strikes?

Can we start a campaign, initially over the internet and eventually over other media, for such a "strike" sometime next year? Kashmiris could use this strike to express their disagreement with the rampant use of this device. It does not have to be marked with a stoppage of work but we can find other manners of expression, thus reinforcing the idea behind this "strike".

Aamir said...: The concept of a strike against a strike is a good one , it has to be different but i also agree that it can be a good way of bringing to light , what is actually in the heart and mind of most kashmiri's.

Not participating in such things is what people like us have been doing anyways.What such a campaign can do is to make people think in that direction.I think it is a great idea.Lets work to find ways of putting it in practice.We may well come up with something.; January 1, 2008 at 3:07 AM

Death Toll in Kashmir since June 29, 2009

Tens of thousands of Kashmiris have died seeking independence. We don't have an exact count of the dead since 1989, however, different sources put the death toll between 40000 to 100,000[1][2][3][4]. For human rights, we keep an exact count of the civilian deaths by police, paramilitary and army, since June 29, 2009. We will also keep account of those who disappeared in the custody of police, paramilitary and army and those who were killed by unidentified gunmen or got killed in grenade attacks or cross fires. Starting from January 2010, we will start including the names of those who die.

Number of Strike Days in Kashmir Starting June 29, 2009

A typical strike in Kashmir means employees skip work, schools, colleges and universities don't run and public transport is off the roads. Since the beginning of the struggle against India in Kashmir, people have observed numerous strikes to tell the world that Kashmiris are suffering. I think strike is a peaceful tool that needs to be used sparingly, but it has been abused in Kashmir and it seems like it has lost its significance. It only adds to the sufferings of the people of Kashmir and leads to a poor work culture.

The purpose of this count is to let the people of kashmir rethink this strategy and also to let the world know that millions of people somewhere want to tell you something through these strikes. although there were at least 10 days lost in June 2009, that I know of, because of strikes, I chose not to include them here since I don't have an accurate account. We will begin a counter to keep track of the strike days in Kashmir from June 29, 2009.
